On Monday, team India named a robust squad for the Asia Cup 2023, set to commence on the 30th of this month. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue will kickstart their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele on September 2. Although the Indian team has a rock-solid top order, the number four position is still up for grabs, with plenty of able candidates contesting for it.

In the press conference on the selection day, skipper Rohit Sharma was vocal about the matter, reverberating the need of having flexibility in the batting positions in ODIs. However, legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar has spoken in favour of keeping the opening combination out of such experiments.

However, as quoted by News18, the ex-cricketer opined that India could consider having Virat Kohli at number four in case the new ball does some damage to their top order.

'Rohit shouldn't bat down the order, you can have Kohli at 4'- Sunil Gavaskar

"Any team has to be flexible, but I don’t want to disturb the top order. I don’t think Rohit Sharma should be looking to bat down the order. Yes, you can look at having Kohli at No. 4, particularly, if a wicket falls early because the new ball can do some early damage," Gavaskar stated.

“Every time India has lost, I think it’s that the fact the new ball in the first 10-12 overs, India have lost three or four wickets, and both wickets out of these wickets have been Sharma and Kohli, who’ve been the victims, so it’s difficult. Maybe, look at it depending on the situation," he added.

Talking about the Indian team, Shreyas Iyer has been declared fit and is all set to start as the number four in their batting order. However, given he is returning from a long injury layoff, India are doubtful of his success in the mega event. So, in case he has a few rusty outings, the management could try out different options at the number four position before the World Cup on home soil.
