Indian head coach Rahul Dravid expressed confidence in KL Rahul keeping wickets in India’s upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, starting December 26 at Centurion.
Dravid, however, asserted that Rahul's prior experience in limited-overs wicketkeeping positions him well for the Test matches against South Africa. Furthermore, India has the option of KS Bharat as an alternative wicketkeeper.
Here’s what Rahul Dravid was quoted as saying in the press conference:
“It’s an exciting challenge as we have a couple of keepers to choose from. We have had conversations with KL Rahul, and he is confident of keeping wickets In Tests. He has done it in 50 overs which isn't easy as it takes a lot out of your body."
Since his comeback in the Asia Cup 2023, KL Rahul has consistently displayed top-notch performance. Notably, he led Team India to victory in the ODI series against South Africa, becoming the second captain, after Virat Kohli, to accomplish this milestone.
“He’s prepared, as in the last six to seven months, he has done a lot of keeping. This will be a new and exciting challenge for him,” Dravid added.
Rahul has kept wickets for India in 35 ODIs and 8 T20Is, but he is yet to don the gloves in the longest format of the game, which tests both mental toughness and concentration as players need to don the gloves for extended periods.
