'No Space For Him in India's Top 4': R Ashwin Dismisses Sanju Samson's World Cup Chances

Team India continues to experiment in a bid to find their ideal One-Day International XI for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. With players like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer unavailable, coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma have given Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav opportunities during the ongoing West Indies tour.

A fan favourite, and extremely talented Samson has been inconsistent, which has raised questions about his place in the side, who did score a fifty in the second ODI last week.

India's premier Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who enjoys a good rapport with Sanju, while doing an analytical show on his YouTube channel, explained why the Rajasthan Royals captain cannot bat up the order for the Indian ODI setup.

The off-spinner articulated that while Sanju bats up the order in IPL, all top 4 positions in the Indian ODI side are almost fixed with Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.

Here's what Ashwin said

"When it comes to Team India, the number 3 and 4 slot is not open. Given Sanju's ability and talent, we know he can change the course of he game at any point. He is a very good guy and we all want good for him.

But the role we expect from Sanju when it comes to Team India is different. There is no space for him in the Top 4. Whether there will be a spot for him after the World Cup or after one or two years after the World Cup, we will have to wait and watch."

In 13 ODIs for India, Samson has scored 390 runs since 2021. However, he has recorded three failures in four outings in the ongoing Caribbean tour.
