With the World Cup only 3 months away the Indian team are still struggling with the middle order dilemma. The one player who was showing some consistency in the middle order for India before his unfortunate injury is Shreyas Iyer. The right-handed batter had come into the limelight since he debuted in the ipl in 2015 and showed amazing talent and potential to finally don the blue jersey in 2017. He has been going from strength to strength in the whiteball format and has a great record in ODI’s with 1631 runs from 42 games with an impressive average of 46.6.

He was a batsmen not only known for having great technique but also his ability to switch different gears in his innings right from rotating the strikes and finding gaps to playing the big hits when required. The maturity and skill shown by Iyer in the middle order in forming partnerships and playing crucial knocks made him a perfect choice in the middle order especially if the top order failed on the given day.

The SENA nations have always been one of the top cricketing nations in World Cricket and it is important to dominate one of them to win the most prestigious trophy in cricket. Iyer has been one of the Indian batsmen who was looking good against these teams filled with world class players since last year. Iyer has scored 245 runs in the 6 innings he has played against these top teams and has a great average of 61.25 against them.

He has the third best average out of the top batsmen since last year against these top nations and is just under Harry Tector and Mohd Rizwan who are averaging 75.00 and 68.60. Shreyas Iyer also had the best strike rate against these teams(103.81) which indicates his ability to put oppositions under pressure as well.

The batsmen under him are Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards with 103.36 and Rishab Pant with 100 who is another middle order prospect India will miss in the world cup. These stats show that Iyer has performed well against one of the best teams in the world and the men in blue will be hoping for him to be completely fit and solve the middle order crisis for the team.

Conclusion

In conclusion Iyer looks to be the batter who can keep the required balance in the middle order. We should also not forget the experience he brings to the table as well along with his performance as he has also led two IPL teams and has had promising results as a skipper. With his skill and ability the men in blue should hope that he gets back to complete fitness not only for the World Cup but also in the future as well since he can be an important addition to the Indian side in the upcoming tours as well.

With his balanced approach to the game he can build partnerships and finish games and give confidence to aggressive batsmen like Hardik Pandya to play his natural game. It is also important to bring up his ability to play spin which will be an important aspect to look at since the World Cup is going to be in India where there are alot of tracks that will support spinners.
