Once a rising star in Indian cricket, Karnataka’s Karun Nair has quietly faded from the spotlight, despite his unforgettable triple century in Test cricket. Even though his international career was cut short, the talented batter didn’t stop working hard.
As a result of that, the cricket world witnessed a ‘Karun Nair Show’ in the last IPL encounter between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. Following his standout performance, former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu called on the BCCI to bring the Karnataka star into the squad for the upcoming Test series against England.
Rayudu Can’t Stop Praising The Star
After a dazzling season in the last edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, ace Karnataka batter Karun Nair successfully earned an IPL contract with the Delhi Capitals. Patiently waiting in the wings, he finally got his moment and made it count. Batting at No. 3, the Karnataka star unleashed a blistering 89 off just 40 balls, striking at a fiery 222.50 and reminding everyone of the class he brings to the big stage.
After he played an outstanding knock, the entire cricket world came together to praise his heroics. Former Indian player Ambati Rayudu is also one of them. Acknowledging how the batter rose above years of being overlooked, Rayudu praised his stunning return.
“It’s sheer persistence because what you go through when things don’t go well for you in India is not easy to withstand. A lot of people have gone through that, and very few have come out of that with flying colours, and Karun Nair is one,” he said.
“Because once you get lost in the domestic system in India, it is very, very tough to make a comeback. Especially because mentally you’re always dragged down by so many things around you, and a lot of people will write you off,” he added.
Rayudu Pushes For Karun Nair's Spot In India's Squad
Even being only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to smash over 300 runs in a Test innings, he didn’t secure his place in Team India’s squad for long. Despite being in India’s squad for the England tour in 2018, he didn’t play any games. Now, after consistent domestic brilliance, Ambati Rayudu has called on the BCCI to give Nair a deserved comeback, believing he could be a crucial player in tough English conditions.
“Cricket is a game that moves on fast, but still, cricket has moved on, but Karun Nair has not moved on. He has never left, learning, never left working hard, never left the belief that he could make a comeback, especially in Test cricket. I would sincerely hope and love that he goes to England. He’s on that flight, uh, in the Test series,” he said.
Team India is all set to face England in a five-match Test series starting from June 20. It will be interesting to see if Kaun Nair finds a place in the squad or not.
