'Negative Point Is That They Think...': Kapil Dev Lashes Out At Indian Players Not Approaching For Advice

Kapil Dev, the former captain of the Indian cricket team and the World Cup-winning skipper of 1983, has taken a swipe at the present Indian players in response to Sunil Gavaskar's recent remark. Gavaskar had expressed his disappointment that current cricketers don't approach him for advice.

Kapil Dev suggested that the current generation of players appears to have developed arrogance due to their significant earnings and fame. He further pointed out that they seem to believe they already know everything and do not seek guidance from former cricketers.

After India's defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia at The Oval, Sunil Gavaskar had criticized the Indian team and questioned their reluctance to seek advice from former cricketing greats. Gavaskar reminisced about how former cricketers like Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar used to seek his advice in the past. However, that was not the same case anymore.

When Kapil Dev was asked about his reaction to Gavaskar's comment in an interview with The Week magazine, he echoed his former teammate's sentiments and expressed his own criticism of the present players' attitude.During the same interview, Kapil Dev disagreed with Ravi Shastri's statement that all-rounder Hardik Pandya's body is not capable of handling the demands of Test cricket.

Here's what Kapil Dev said:

"Differences come out, the good (thing) about these players...is that they are very confident. Negative point is they think they know everything. I don't know how to put it better than that. But they are confident, but they think 'you don't have to ask anybody'. What we believe is an experienced person can help you,"

"Sometimes when there is too much money, arrogance comes. These cricketers think they know everything. That's the difference. I would say there are so many cricketers who need help. When Sunil Gavaskar is there, why can't you talk? Where is the ego? There is no ego as such. They feel 'we are good enough'. Maybe they are good enough, but extra help from somebody who has seen 50 seasons of cricket, he knows things. Listening sometimes can change your thought."
