In a significant move, veteran batter Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket via social media, bringing an end to a distinguished career in the longest format. The decision came amid mounting speculation that he would not be leading India in their upcoming five-match away Test series against England in June.

Manoj Tiwary Question's BCCI

The 37-year-old's retirement has triggered strong reactions, particularly over the manner in which it unfolded. Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary expressed disappointment that Rohit Sharma was not given a proper farewell on the field.

"If Rohit Sharma had retired not on social media but on the field after playing, it would have been a more fitting send-off. It would've felt better for all of us too". Look at his record as a Test captain, it's very good. He's won 12 Tests, lost 9, and drawn 3. So there's no doubt about his success rate," said Tiwary, speaking on Cricbuzz Live.

Rohit Sharma's Test Career

Rohit Sharma’s Test career began in 2013 and spanned over a decade. The star batter has played 67 Tests and made 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. His record includes 12 centuries, 18 half-centuries. Under his captaincy, India maintained their dominance in subcontinental conditions and showed competitive spirit abroad.

It is important to note that however, his final months in red-ball cricket were marred by a dip in form and results. India suffered a shocking 0-3 home whitewash to New Zealand, followed by 1-3 loss in Australia.

Who Can Lead India In Test?

As Rohit steps away, attention swiftly turns to who will take over the Test captaincy. Reports suggest that Shubman Gill is the frontrunner for the role. The 24-year-old has impressed with both temperament and technique in the longest format, and is seen as a long-term leadership prospect.

India's five-Test series in England, scheduled to begin in June, will mark the start of a new era in Indian Test cricket. With Rohit gone and the leadership question wide open, selectors and team management face a defining decision for the future of red-ball cricket in India.
