On Wednesday, May 7, India skipper Rohit Sharma took to social media platforms where he announced his retirement from Test cricket. The news came as a surprise for cricket fans as India are set to travel to England for a Test series, but now the WTC runners-up are without a regular captain.
In the latest events, there are reports that Shubman Gill has emerged as the front-runner to replace hitman as India's new Test captain. IndianExpress, who first broke the news of Rohit set to announce his retirement, reported that Gill is set to be the new India captain.
BCCI Hints At Gill's Leadership Role
Before the news of Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket was made public, there were reports floating on the internet that the BCCI is looking to appoint Shubman Gill as the new India vice-captain, replacing Jasprit Bumrah.
Further, now with Rohit Sharma gone and Gill doing great leadership with Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, it also allows Gill to open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in Test cricket. Further, there is a minimal difference in Gill's stats when he opens the innings and bats at No.3 .
If we look at Gill's numbers in Test cricket, then his average while opening the innings and batting at No.3 are pretty similar. While opening the innings, Gill boasts an average of 32, while he averages 37 batting at No.3.
