Former Indian cricketer, Mohammad Kaif is highly impressed with Sanju Samson's performance and believes he should be included in India's final 15-player squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023 that is slated to be played in India in October-November.

Kaif highlighted Samson's versatility for World Cup selection

Samson's significant fifty in the decisive third ODI against West Indies in Tarouba has attracted attention to his suitability for a middle-order position.

Competing with Suryakumar Yadav for the spot, his excellent performance came at a crucial time, especially since injuries have sidelined Indian middle-order bulwarks Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.

Kaif expressed his admiration for Samson's ability to play an essential role during a must-win situation. During the book launch of Amrit Mathur's 'Pitchside’ on Wednesday, Kaif said that he was struck by Samson's impactful innings. Whether playing at number four or five, Kaif pointed out that Samson has previously excelled in those positions.

"I am massively impressed by Samson. He played an impactful knock, whether, at four or five, he has done it in the past,” said Kaif.

The former middle-order maestro further opined that it wouldn't be wise to place Ishan Kishan or Axar Patel in the middle order. He stressed the importance of having someone capable of playing left-arm spin and leg spin, roles that Samson can fulfil.

Highlighting the Kerala-based batter's recent knock in the third ODI as evidence of his readiness for the World Cup, Kaif insisted that Samson has proved himself under pressure.

Kishan or Axar Patel aren't the solution, Sanju is: Kaif

"Sending Kishan or Axar Patel in the middle order is not a great idea. You need someone who can play left-arm spin, leg spin and Samson can do that. His knock in the third ODI came under pressure and he is ready for the World Cup,” added the 42-year-old.

With the cricketing community's eyes fixed on the selection, Samson's entry into India’s World Cup squad could mark a significant milestone in his career. Only time will tell if he makes the cut, but his recent displays have undoubtedly made him a player to watch in the lead-up to cricket's premier one-day tournament.
