Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder, Riyan Parag has robustly rubuffed allegations of nepotism related to his extended run in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Riyan Parag shut down nepotism claims in IPL selection

The young Assam cricketer's selection in 54 matches for RR, despite a modest batting average of 16.22 and only four wickets, has prompted criticism and speculation of favoritism. Many have questioned his selection while other young talents remain benched.

Parag, who recently put on an impressive display in Deodhar Trophy 2023 by scoring two centuries within five days, opened up about the criticism and how it has affected him. Speaking to Cricket.com, he expressed his frustration about the perceptions surrounding him.

Parag voiced a deep deep concern over the misconception that he made it to the team through personal connections or that he takes his opportunity with the 2008 champions for granted.

“What hurts me the most is that people think I take it for granted, I have some connections or sources, and that's absolutely HORSE****, I told you about my journey. People from Assam haven't played at the IPL level, I'm going to play a lot more,” said Parag.

The all-rounder further acknowledged that while some may assume otherwise, he is confident in his work ethic and believes that those who truly know him can attest to his dedication.

“I do not take anything for granted, I have the craziest work ethic, you can ask people who are close to me. All that goes unnoticed because I don't brag about it on social media. You can have all the assumptions if you don't want to know me,” added the youngster.

He firmly stated that he will continue to play cricket in the same way he always has, with an immense amount of joy and fun and on his own terms, without being overly concerned about his performance.

"I do not care. I definitely do not care about what people think about me. I'm going to play cricket the way I started playing cricket, that was me having **** tons of fun. Performances for me don't really matter, as long as I'm having fun and can stay calm, I think it is sorted, man,” concluded Parag.
