Australia skipper Pat Cummins believes the upcoming India vs Australia ODI series might be the last time home fans get to see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in action on Australian soil. Speaking ahead of the series starting October 19 in Perth, Cummins, who is ruled out with a back injury, called the contest “special” for every cricket fan Down Under.
Cummins on Kohli and Rohit’s legacy
“Virat and Rohit have been part of almost every Indian side for the last 15 years, so this might be the last chance for the Australian public to see them playing out here,” Cummins told JioHotstar.
He added:
“They’ve obviously been champions of the game for India and are always very well supported. Whenever we play them, the crowd gets loud.”
The Australian captain’s words hit home with many fans, especially since both Rohit and Kohli have now retired from Test cricket and are taking it series by series in ODIs.
Cummins disappointed to miss the series
The 32-year-old pacer will sit out the ODIs due to a back injury and admitted it is tough to miss a marquee contest like this.
“It’s a shame to miss the white-ball series against India. I think the crowds are going to be huge. There’s already a lot of excitement built up here in Australia,” Cummins said. “Whenever you miss a game, it’s disappointing. But missing a big series like this is always a bit harder to take.”
The series that brings the stars back
The three-match AUS vs ODI series marks the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international cricket after almost eight months away. Both had stepped away from Tests earlier this year and last played for India during the Champions Trophy title win.
India, under new ODI captain Shubman Gill, will play three ODIs in Perth (Oct 19), Adelaide (Oct 23) and Sydney (Oct 25) before the action shifts to a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8.
