Shubman Gill may be known as the calm and composed Test captain, but teammate Abhishek Sharma has now revealed a mischievous side of Gill from their childhood cricket days.

The 25-year-old opener recalled how Gill had a special talent, the ability to get away with mischief by simply changing his expressions. Abhishek narrated an unforgettable incident from their U16 days in Dharamsala, which, he said, still makes him laugh and shake his head in disbelief.

Abhishek Sharma recalls sweet memories from the U16 days with Shubman Gill

Talking on Breakfast with Champions, Abhishek Sharma recalled that during their U16 playing days, they had a tiff with the bus driver after the latter refused to play music of their choice for a 500-meter ride to the Dharamsala stadium.

“There is one guy who did a lot of mischief in age-group cricket but never got caught, and that is Shubman. I will tell you an incident. We were in Dharamsala for Under-16. Our hotel was 500m away from the stadium. We used to go there by bus. The driver was stopping the music, but we wanted to play Punjabi songs. He said no, and we got into an argument with him," Sharma said.

When the driver lodged a complaint to the coaches, they pulled up the players and lined them up to identify the primary mischievous kids. According to Abhishek, Gill, who was the one to instigate the fight, escaped punishment through his ability to make an innocent face.

"And the one who was shouting the most was Shubman. The incident went to the coaches and the drivers complained. They asked the drivers to identify who did it. There were 4-5 of us. Five of us were standing in a line and Shubman was last. The coach pointed towards each of us and asked the drivers. They said no it was not him (Shubman). I was shocked," he added.

While Abhishek Sharma and the others were made to sign letters warning of being sent back home, Shubman Gill walked away without a scratch.

"They called the four of us out and made us sign a letter that was to send us back home. I was sad that how come the one who started it was not called out. He has a talent to change expressions. He made an innocent face that day.”

The story has since gone viral, with fans loving this never-before-seen glimpse of Gill’s mischievous side.

Abhishek and Gill have been playing together since U14

Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma have known each other since early youth cricket in Punjab. They played together in the U12 and U14 tournaments, with Abhishek often captaining and Gill serving as his vice-captain.

Their participation in the Dhruv Pandove Trophy (U14) was a pivotal point as Punjab won that tournament, defeating Delhi in the final. Abhishek was the Man of the Series.

Even as youngsters, they showed leadership and resilience. In one U14 game vs Himachal Pradesh, Punjab had a deficit and were in danger of losing. After tea, Abhishek Sharma picked up a wicket; together with Shubman Gill, they rallied the team, bowled well and chased the target quickly.

Their chemistry, rooted in these early days, has carried into their senior cricket careers.
