India are all set to feature in a five-match Test series against England under a new captain, Shubman Gill. It is the start of a new WTC cycle for India and a new era in the longest format after the retirement of Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Rohit Sharma.
Thus, India are going with a comparatively inexperienced team and are expected to face some severe challenges in English conditions. Many people have raised concerns over the appointment of Shubman Gill as Test captain, given his lack of experience and proven credentials as a Test cricketer.
Kuldeep Yadav Expresses Confidence In Shubman Gill's Captaincy
However, there are other former cricketers and pundits that have expressed confidence in his abilities. Now, with just a few days left for the opening Test, Kuldeep Yadav, India's ace-spinner, has also given his vote of confidence regarding Shubman Gill's captaincy. Talking to the media, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, he assured that Shubman Gill is ready to lead India.
The wrist-spinner mentioned that Shubman Gill knows how to lead the team and has worked with seniors in the past. He also revealed that Gill had a lot of conversations with Rohit Sharma in the last one year and feels that Gill has learnt a lot.
Kuldeep also stated that Shubman Gill is quite motivated to lead the team and is very proactive in his aim to take the team forward. The spinner also compared Shubman Gill's approach to the people who captained India in the past and assured that he possesses similar qualities.
"Shubman knows how to lead a team. He has worked under the seniors in the last couple of years. In the last one year, you'd have seen him in a lot of discussions with Rohit bhai - not only in Tests but even in ODIs. I'm sure he has learned a lot, but as a leader, from what I have seen so far, he's very motivated and he's been playing an active role in lifting the team. I have seen over the last three-four sessions that Shubman has the same qualities that I've seen in our previous leadership groups. He's fully ready to lead us," Kuldeep Yadav as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
India's last Test series win in England came in 2007 and the previous series on English shores ended with a scoreline of 2-2. Thus, Shubman Gill and his team have a tough task in front of them and will have to be at their best to beat Ben Stokes' England.
