Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has said he will never make a biopic on Indian cricketer star Virat Kohli for all the right reasons. While speaking in an interview, Kashyap praised Kohli’s personality and discipline but explained why the cricketer’s story doesn’t fit into his vision of filmmaking.
Virat Kohli is regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of the modern era, admired for his unparalleled consistency, physical fitness, and attacking mentality.
With over 25,000 international runs in all formats, he has raise the bar in batting with his desire for runs and ability to chase in difficult conditions. Eventually statistics aside, Kohli's intensity, leadership, and following from around the world catapulted him into being an icon in sport.
Anurag Kashyap Refuses To Film Virat Kohli’s Story
Popular Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap, known for directing hits like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Dev.D’, was asked whether he would consider directing a movie on Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli’s life, given the batter’s massive fan following and inspiring journey.
Surprisingly, the director, talking to Filmygyan, made it clear that he would avoid the idea, as Kohli is already a hero to the nation.
"I don't know if I would want to because he is already a hero to many people, many children. If I would have to do a biopic, I would choose something difficult from a person’s life. He is a very beautiful man, I know him personally, and he is a very authentic human being," Kashyap said.
Kashyap also revealed that he personally knows Kohli and described him as an “incredible man” with qualities that inspire millions. That being said, he would much rather tell stories that reveal struggles and complexities, rather than glorifying established icons.
"He is very emotional, an incredible person with incredible discipline. He would rather not be part of mediocrity and step away than continue, which is always with the people that I look up to," he added.
Virat Kohli Once Wished To Act In His Own Biopic
In May 2020, during an Instagram Live with Sunil Chhetri, Virat Kohli famously said that he would definitely play himself in a biopic if his wife, Anushka Sharma, was also part of the film.
He clarified that although he’d like to do it, he doesn’t consider himself a professional actor and is aware that acting is a craft.
While there’s no confirmation yet that such a biopic is officially in production, many directors and producers will be keen on filming Kohli’s story once he officially retires from all forms of cricket in the future.
