The ongoing World Test Championship is set to enter its fourth day, and South Africa stands on the brink of making history. Just a step away from glory, they’re closing in on the coveted trophy and eyeing a momentous triumph.

Chasing a massive 282-run target, Aiden Markram’s outstanding century gave a huge boost to the side. After day three wrapped up, SA spinner Keshav Maharaj praised Markram’s exceptional knock, hailing him as a ‘big match player’.

In ICC knockouts, South Africa has always struggled to finish on the winning end for a long time. But the history is about to change on the big stage of the World Test Championship. Up against Australia, the Proteas shook off their first-innings jitters and stormed back stronger, depending on a gritty partnership between Aiden Markram and skipper Temba Bavuma.

Markram’s brilliant ton not only brought South Africa closer to victory but also made him the first from his country to score a hundred in an ICC final. According to Livemint, Keshav Maharaj lauded Markram in a chat with ICC Digital for learning from past mistakes and rising to the big occasion.

“I saw a different sort of desire and focus in Aiden's eyes today when he came off the field (prior to batting) as I think he wanted to rectify the mistake that he made in the first innings,” he said.

“Kudos to him to put that into place. He's a big match player, and big players rise up to the moment and rectify their mistakes very quickly. There's no better fitting moment for him to get a Test hundred here at Lord's in a final against probably a team that I don't think they've ever lost a final,” he added.

After losing Ryan Rickelton’s wicket early on, Australia put South Africa under pressure. But Aiden Markram and skipper Temba Bavuma scripted a stunning turnaround with an unbeaten 143-run stand. As the fourth day approaches, South Africa is just 69 runs away from glory.
