Aiden Markram's majestic century has propelled South Africa to the brink of a historic World Test Championship triumph, chasing 282 against Australia. At 213/2 at stumps on day three, needing just 69 more, Markram's unbeaten 102 and captain Temba Bavuma's gritty 65* have the Proteas poised to end their 27-year wait for an ICC trophy. This commanding performance has also resurrected a seven-year-old observation from Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli's Appreciation Resonates In 2025

Back on March 24, 2018, Virat Kohli took to social media, simply stating: "Aiden Markram is a delight to watch!"

What Was The Tweet About?

The tweet that Kohli made was in response to the 3rd Test between Australia and South Africa in Cape Town where Markram bashed a solid 84 off 145 balls that helped the Proteas in their winning ways.

That tweet resurfaced powerfully as Aiden Markram dominated the Australian attack in the WTC final in the present day, his century featuring 11 elegant boundaries, including the flick that brought up his ton. Kohli's old post went viral, with fans noting his foresight.

The Day 3 Downfall Of Australia

The Proteas' day started by dismissing Australia's tail, including a vital 59-run last-wicket stand. Markram then anchored the chase brilliantly. Partnerships with Wiaan Mulder (27) and Bavuma steadied the ship. Bavuma battled a hamstring injury, with Prince admitting they considered retiring him at tea, but the skipper insisted on continuing.

As per ICC, "It is not done yet, but he has had to fight throughout his career, and this could be a defining moment," Prince, the South African batting coach said, highlighting the team's unity as their "greatest asset."

Despite the commanding position, the challenge remains to stay level-headed. South Africa's history in ICC finals adds weight to these final runs. However, with Markram fulfilling Kohli's prophecy and Temba Bavuma battling adversity, the Proteas stand closer than ever to shattering their trophy drought.
