'Kohli Would Go For 42 Crores If He Enters IPL Auction' - Aakash Chopra After Starc Creates History

Aakash Chopra and Suresh Raina weren't amused at IPL franchises' strategy and decision-making behind unprecedented bids made for prominent overseas cricketers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc at the IPL 2024 mini-auction held in Dubai on Tuesday (December 19).

The two former India pacers found it unfair on leading home-grown players for the Aussie pace pairing of Cummins and Starc to fetch record-breaking sums of INR 20.50 and 24.75 crores at the bidding war from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), respectively.

Chopra even came up with a hypothetical scenario where he said if Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legend and world cricket superstar Virat Kohli entered an IPL auction now he could fetch a sum as big as INR 42 crores from one of the franchises.

Chopra, Raina Not Amused With Starc, Cummins Bid

The popular commentator said the IPL auction rules should expand the purse available to each side up to 200 crores, of which 150 crores should be reserved only for iconic Indian stars so they stay above overseas men in terms of salary paid per IPL season.

"The purse should be of INR 200 crore with 150 for the Indian players. The remaining INR 50 crore should be kept for the overseas cricketers. Virat Kohli would go for INR 42 crore if he comes to the auction table," Chopra was quoted as saying by CricToday.

Raina concurred with Chopra's views and found it discomforting to see Starc find a record IPL bid after giving the tournament a cold shoulder for eight long years as he tried to manage his workload and prioritised international commitments for Australia.

The former CSK giant took names of some of the iconic Indian players who are earning way less in contracts with respective IPL franchises than Starc and Cummins.

"Jasprit Bumrah for INR 12 crore, MS Dhoni for INR 12 crore, Mohammed Shami for INR 5 crore. And the player who was not a part of the league for 8 years and played just 26 matches was given almost 25 crore. This is not done," he said.
