Ace speedster Pat Cummins felt jubilant after pipping Indian stalwarts Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja to become the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2023.

As the Australian skipper was bestowed with the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, he took a moment out to praise his two Indian counterparts who were quite close to bagging the prestigious award themselves.

Having encountered them across formats at the height of their respective careers, the Aussie fast-bowling great said it was "special" for him to learn he is a contender for the honour alongside esteemed Indian names such as Kohli and Jadeja.

Cummins Lauds Kohli, Jadeja

"It’s a huge honour. It has been a big year, lots of wonderful team success. To get this individual honour is huge and I am pretty amazed. In terms of individual accolades, it is right up there," Cummins was quoted as saying by ICC after receiving the award for which his Australian teammate Travis Head was the other nominee.

"All the other nominees obviously had fantastic years as well. Travis, as a team-mate, I saw him win the World Test Championship Final and the World Cup final, and he was the Player of the Match in both matches. He had an amazing year."

"Jadeja and Kohli are both super consistent. They find a way to drag their team out of trouble and win it for them, so to win alongside those guys is really special," he added.

Notably, Cummins became just the fifth Australian cricketer to receive the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy after Ricky Ponting (2006 and 2007), Mitchell Johnson (2009 and 2014), Michael Clarke (2013) and Steve Smith (2015).

Cummins took 42 wickets in 11 Tests at just 27.50 apiece while guiding Australia to the World Test Championship (WTC) title with a win over arch-rivals India in June, a feat he repeated against the Men in Blue in the final of the 2023 World Cup under his captaincy come November in Ahmedabad. Cummins took 15 wickets in the quadrennial event.
