Former India fast bowler RP Singh has questioned Kolkata Knight Riders for spending a big amount on Venkatesh Iyer during the IPL 2025 mega auction. KKR bought Iyer for a whopping INR 23.75 crore, but he has not lived up to expectations so far.

KKR, the IPL 2025 defending champions, slipped to 7th place in the points table after the latest rain washout against PBKS. Their odds of making it to the playoffs are decreasing, and non-performing players have naturally come under scrutiny.

The one to make the most headlines is Venkatesh Iyer. After KKR bought him for a whopping price of INR 23.75 crore, Iyer’s performance dropped to a new low.

RP Singh Questions KKR’s Decision To Choose Venkatesh Iyer Over Shreyas

In the 8 matches Venkatesh Iyer has played this season, he has scored only 135 runs at an average of 22.50. Former cricketer RP Singh, meanwhile, has said that KKR made a mistake by investing so much money in Iyer without making him a key player or considering him for captaincy.

He also mentioned that KKR’s decision to let go of Shreyas Iyer was a huge error. Shreyas, who led Kolkata to their third IPL title last year, is now captaining Punjab Kings and doing a good job.

"KKR have invested a lot in Venkatesh Iyer. He has been given a lot of time. Let him be an opener. When you make a player a part of your team in such a big auction, you must be thinking about whether he will be our main player or our captaincy material. I think KKR management has made a mistake. When you left your best captain (Shreyas Iyer) at the auction table, somebody would definitely pick him, and now he's captaining well at PBKS," Singh said.

Speaking to JioHotstar, RP Singh suggested that KKR should let Venkatesh Iyer open the batting to give him more time at the crease. He said that dropping him now would not be the right move. RP Singh also added that the high auction price might be putting extra pressure on Iyer.

"At this moment, I don't think it will be wise to drop Iyer. You have given him a number of matches. You can only get a quality player back in form by giving him more matches. The money given to him to make him a part of the team may be playing on his mind. 'I have received so much money, why can't I make my team a champion?' There is an overpressure," he added.

KKR's IPL 2025 Playoffs Odds After Rain Forces Abandonment

KKR faced a setback as their recent match of IPL 2025 against PBKS was abandoned due to heavy rain at Eden Gardens. PBKS had scored a strong 201 runs, but KKR got to play just one over before rain stopped the game and it was called off. KKR still has a slim chance to qualify for the playoffs, but the path is tough.

They have 5 more group-stage matches left. To stay alive in the competition without depending on other teams, KKR must win all 5 of their remaining matches. If they do that, they will end with 17 points, a total that usually guarantees a playoff spot.
