As he steered India past the finish line again in the opening game of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan on Thursday (January 11), Rinku Singh revealed a message from legendary MS Dhoni, which the rising young left-hander has drilled in his headspace and overall psychology at the crease.

Staying unbeaten after smashing 16* off nine deliveries to propel India past Afghanistan's modest 158/5 on a flat deck in Mohali, Rinku spoke to the commentators about his mantra for success in a demanding role at No. 6 and said paying heed to the invaluable advice shared by the former skipper has helped a great deal.

Rinku said since then he makes sure he doesn't overthink stuff at the crease and focuses mainly on reacting to the ball and the situation he is walking into. The player admitted he feels lost if he overplays the challenge at hand and loses sight of the main job he is sent to do.

Rinku Reveals Message From Dhoni

"I've spoken with Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni), he just told me to react according to the ball, keep your calm and I just do the same thing. I don't think a lot while batting, just react to the ball," Rinku said at the post-match interaction with the broadcaster.

Having now finished off the proceedings on multiple occasions, the explosive left-hander underlined how much he loves batting at No. 6 and relishes the responsibility bestowed on his shoulders by the team management and the selectors.

"I have got a habit of batting at 6 and finishing games, I'm feeling very happy with this job. Enjoyed the cold conditions, it was tough while fielding though," added the 26-year-old. "I just try to talk to myself, batting at 6, I don't have the chance to face too many balls or score too many runs, that's the thing I keep telling myself."

Rinku's little cameo in Mohali not only helped India take a 1-0 lead in the series but also elevated his runs tally in T20Is to 278 runs with a jaw-dropping strike rate of 180.51.
