Former cricket-turned-analyst, Akash Chopra stirred a huge controversy. In a YouTube video, he claimed that Shreyas Iyer lied about KKR not reaching out to him for retention talks. He added that Iyer got his Karma as he landed in a franchise he initially had reservations about.
Shreyas Iyer was released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)before the IPL 2025 mega auction in what came as a shock to the fans. He led the team to a title in IPL 2024 and not every day an IPL-winning captain enters a mega auction.
However, Iyer made startling claims during his interview with India Express. He cited a lack of miscommunication as the primary reason behind his fall out with KKR. He added that KKR didn’t show strong intent to retain him and eventually, they mutually decided to part ways.
Akash Chopra shreds Shreyas Iyer into pieces over lies about KKR retention
Meanwhile, Akash Chopra has categorically refuted Shreyas Iyer’s claim. In a recent YouTube video, Chopra said KKR did talk to Iyer about retention and that the batter lied in his interview.
“Shreyas Iyer was the captain. He should have been in the original scheme of things. KKR did not speak to him — he has said this in an interview. I can now confirm there were discussions between KKR and Shreyas Iyer. They had a long chat. There was no agreement. That’s a separate issue," Chopra said.
The analyst also added that Iyer got his Karma as he landed in Punjab Kings, a franchise he had apprehensions about prior to the mega auction.
“I am not going to spell it out. Shreyas had some apprehensions about how it goes in the auction, ‘if I end up somewhere, then what will happen’. It is interesting what has happened. Sometimes you start thinking, ‘Karma is real yaar’, you never know. I can confirm the discussions did take place. However, Shreyas says there were no discussions. There is some discrepancy. I can confirm there were talks. I, too, have my sources," he added.
Shreyas Iyer named captain of PBKS
PBKS chose a unique platform to announce their captain for the IPL 2025 season. Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh turned up at the reality show Bigg Boss to unveil Iyer as captain. The Mumbai lad was bought by the franchise for a whopping price of INR 26.75 crore and his appointment as captain was certainly not a surprise.
