‘I’ve Just Got…’, Glenn Maxwell Opens Up On His Role As A Spinner In The Australian Team

Australian spin-bowling all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is happy with the way the ball is coming out of his hand in the World Cup. Maxwell emphasised that he hasn't focused on any specific changes but has gained clarity in his bowling.

Maxwell made these comments on October 10, following Australia's loss to India in Chennai. Despite his limited impact with the bat in that match, Maxwell delivered an economical bowling performance, conceding 33 runs from eight overs without taking any wickets.

"Obviously, different conditions, ball's coming out really well, I probably haven't worked on anything specific. I've just got a real clarity with the way it feels coming out of my hand. It was probably a little bit different the last couple of overs the other night where I was putting five fingers on the ball hoping to go down there and one bounce and didn't throw it straight over the batter's head,"  said Glenn Maxwell in an interview with cricket.com.au.

Maxwell's bowling stint began in the 10th over of India's chase, ahead of Adam Zampa, the primary spinner for Australia. Despite his efforts, the Australian team couldn't defend their target. India successfully chased the 200-run goal with four wickets in hand, thanks to impressive innings by KL Rahul (97*) and Virat Kohli (85).

Australia seeing Maxwell as frontline spinner

In the earlier innings on a turning pitch at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium, Australia struggled against the Indian spinners and were bowled out for a mere 199 runs. However, the more significant issue was their inability to maintain pressure after the pacers reduced India to 2/3, resulting in a six-wicket loss.

Despite Australia reducing India to 2/3, they failed to take a wicket for over 35 overs when the outcome was all but certain. Maxwell bowled effectively, but his efforts weren't complemented by Adam Zampa, who leaked runs in a low-scoring contest.

Considering the potential for turning pitches in the tournament, especially in the later stages, Maxwell is expected to play a crucial role as the second frontline spinner for Australia.
