‘It’s Very Difficult Task...' – Gautam Gambhir Highlights Virat Kohli’s Strength

You won’t often see Gautam Gambhir talking about Virat Kohli until and unless it’s absolutely necessary. There was an ugly spat between the two Delhi natives during the previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and it wasn't the first time the two clashed.

Even if it's indirect, talking about each other's strengths and weaknesses is incredibly valuable for game’s ardent lovers.

And the unthinkable happened on Thursday (October 26) in the middle of England’s World Cup clash against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. There, Gambhir emphasised the significance of singles and doubles in ODI cricket—a skill that Kohli has long since mastered—after the reigning champions were bowled out for a pitiful 156 in just 33.2 overs.

Here is what Gautam Gambhir said on Thursday

"It is very easy to hit sixes and fours in ODI cricket. But taking singles, batting deep, and taking it till the end is a very difficult task. Because you have to stop your temptation to hit boundaries," Gambhir told host broadcasters Star Sports during England's World Cup match against Sri Lanka.

Swashbuckling England are known for their hard-hitting abilities rather than taking singles and doubles. Under Eoin Morgan, they made revolutionary progress, which rewarded them with an elusive ODI World Cup trophy in 2019 and a T20 World Cup trophy in 2022.

However, things are not going Jos Buttler & Co.’s way in the ongoing championship. Having lost four out of their opening five matches, they are almost out of the competition. To make matters worse, they will next face Rohit Sharma-led India on Sunday in Lucknow.
