The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn’t yet confirmed the venues for the IPL 2025 playoffs, even though the tournament schedule was adjusted after being paused on May 8 due to the India-Pakistan conflict.
However, Sourav Ganguly, former BCCI president and cricket legend, is optimistic that Eden Gardens in Kolkata will still host the IPL 2025 final on June 3. His confidence comes from the strong relationship between the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and the BCCI.
Sourav Ganguly Hopes for IPL 2025 Final at Eden Gardens
The IPL season had to stop for a week starting May 8 because of tensions between India and Pakistan. The final, which was supposed to happen on May 25, has now been moved to June 3.
Eden Gardens, which hosted the opening match of the 2025 season, was chosen for the final after Kolkata Knight Riders won the 2024 title. Initially, it was supposed to host the second qualifier on May 23 and the final on May 25.
However, since the BCCI hasn't confirmed whether Eden Gardens will keep these matches, there’s speculation that Ahmedabad might host the final instead.
When asked about the uncertainty, Ganguly said they are in talks with the BCCI and expressed hope that the final would still take place at Eden Gardens. He pointed out that moving the final isn’t simple and said, “Is it that easy to shift the final? It’s Eden’s Playoffs, and I am sure everything will be sorted. I’m very hopeful."
A group of fans also protested outside Eden Gardens, wanting the final to remain in Kolkata. Ganguly responded, saying, “Protest doesn’t help much. BCCI has a very good relationship with the Cricket Association of Bengal.”
The main reason for the BCCI’s hesitation is the weather forecast, as the southwest monsoon is expected to hit Kolkata around early June. The CAB has shared data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to assure the BCCI that the weather will be suitable on June 3. Still, the BCCI believes it’s too early to rely on long-term forecasts and will decide closer to May 25.
