Virender Sehwag heaped praise on renowned Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) powerhitter Andre Russell for an extravagant knock played in his team's IPL 2024 opening game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday (March 23).

The swashbuckling former India and Delhi Capitals (DC) opener lavished compliments on West Indies and KKR six-hitting machine following his tremendous knock of unbeaten 64 off 25 deliveries that elevated the two-time champions to an imposing and eventually match-winning score of 208/7 in 20 overs.

Coming in as late as No.8, Russell hammered the Sunrisers attack to all parts in a scintillating assault, featuring 3 fours and 7 maximums and earned the 'Player of the Match' trophy for his highly influential role in KKR's victory by 4 runs

Sehwag Lauds Andre Russell's Ball Striking

Bringing his inimitable style and humour to the fore, Sehwag praised Russell's "clean ball striking" while indulging in poetry designed to compliment the Caribbean powerhitter, who reinforced his class and impact value for the KKR franchise in their very first game of the new season.

Russell, who made an international comeback late last year and took part in T20I assignments at home against England in December before travelling to Australia in February, entered the IPL 2024 in remarkable touch and switched the beast mode on against a Sunrisers attack, considered one of the better bowling units of the competition.

When he walked in, KKR were placed in a precarious hole at 119/6 inside 14 overs. But Russell's outstanding blitz fetched KKR 89 runs off the last six overs of the innings, which ultimately proved to be the difference between the two teams when young seamer Harshit Rana defended 13 runs required off the last over in the second half.
