India's Shubman Gill stockpiled runs across formats in 2023, amassing 2,154 runs with seven hundred, clinching himself the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award 2022-2023 during BCCI-organised Naman Awards.

However, his form lately in Tests is nothing to rave about, which Gill talked about ahead of the start of play on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against England at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

The 24-year-old, who from an opening position has moved down to the No.3 slot, stated how 2024 will be a breakthrough year for the batter in Test cricket after tasing success in white-ball cricket last year. Speaking to Jio Cinema, Gill also talked about wanting to bat at No.3 for a long time and make the slot his own.

I like batting at three - Shubman Gill

"I like batting at three. I hope I'd be there for a long time. We are used to playing in these wickets and these conditions. It's about trusting your defense and then to be able to pounce on the opportunity that you get to score runs. Last year was a breakthrough year for me in white-ball. This year, I believe, is going to be a breakthrough year for me in red-ball. Generally when you are opening, you are more used to going straightaway. It's all about how calm you can be and how much assessment you can do while you are out there, and I got that quite a few times to do.”

In 20 Tests, Gill has managed 1,040 runs with two centuries and four half-centuries, which compared to his limited-overs numbers are quite mediocre.

Meanwhile, after the first session of play in Hyderabad at Day 1, the game hangs in balance as England have notched 108/3 in 28 overs, however, the Indian spinners did scalp three wickets in a cluster.
