India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has directly hit back at former cricketer Mohammad Kaif for suggesting that he was avoiding death overs due to fear of injury. The spat unfolded on the social media platform X, where Bumrah dismissed Kaif’s analysis as “inaccurate.”

The argument began when Kaif said on social media that under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Bumrah usually bowled overs like 1, 13, 17, and 19, covering both early breakthroughs and death overs.

However, in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, Jasprit Bumrah has been used differently by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir. He has bowled 3 overs inside the powerplay and only one later in the innings.

According to Kaif, this shift was a sign that Bumrah was being extra cautious after his back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Kaif argued that Bumrah preferred bowling when his body was already warmed up and avoided high-pressure death overs to prevent another injury.

Jasprit Bumrah, however, was quick to respond. He quote-tweeted Kaif’s post and made it clear that the former India cricketer had been wrong about his fitness before and was wrong again this time.

On the field, Bumrah’s performances have spoken louder than the debate. In India’s Super 4 match against Bangladesh, he bowled brilliantly up front, troubling batters with pace and movement.

While the pacer has not been the main death bowler in this Asia Cup, India’s experiment has worked decently so far. Instead of leaning heavily on him at the end, India have rotated options like Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, and even part-time bowlers, thus reducing overreliance on the right-arm pacer.

Bumrah signs up for West Indies series despite workload concerns

That being said, Jasprit Bumrah has squashed the workload management debate by making himself available for the home Test series against the West Indies, scheduled to begin on October 2. He will be leading the pace attack with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Despite a back injury scare, Bumrah is committed to playing 3 formats for India.
