Having won the two-match Test series 1-0, India are now gearing up to clash with West Indies in a three-match ODI series, starting with the opening match at Kensington Oval Bridgetown in Barbados on Thursday.

WI vs IND ODI series is a great opportunity for youngsters

The series has gained added significance as it marks a historic moment in cricket; for the first time, the West Indies, two-time champions, will be absent from the ODI World Cup scheduled later this year in India, following their failure to qualify.

Ahead of the ODI series opener, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma highlighted the significance of the ODI series in a video shared by the BCCI on Twitter.

Rohit emphasized that the series would be crucial in providing exposure to the newer members of the team who lack extensive match experience. According to him, his approach will enable the team to assess how well they perform in their designated positions and how they respond to the challenges on the field.

"For us this series is very important because many players are new here, they haven't played much matches, so its important to give them exposure, they should be played and given a role and we will also get a chance to see that if they have been given a role, how they are performing in the role, how they are responding," said Rohit.

The captain further stated that before the T20 World Cup last year, they focused on observing the performance of new players in their assigned roles. He added that in the three matches of this series, they aim to give chances to various players and closely evaluate their performances.

The veteran opener also reckoned that after the 10-12 ODIs leading up to the World Cup, they will make informed decisions about the final squad composition for the marquee event.

"We had focussed on all these things before the T20 World Cup last year that the new players who have come in the team how they perform In the roles they have been given. In the 3 matches here, we will see what all players we can give chances to and then we will take a decision after these 10-12 ODIS (before the World Cup)," concluded the 36-year-old.
