‘I’m Pretty Keen’ - Steve Smith Wants to Replace Warner As Opener For Australia

In the ongoing debate regarding the replacement for the retiring David Warner in Australia's Test lineup, vice-captain Steve Smith has shown his interest in opening the batting. This declaration puts him in contention for the role.

Australia and Pakistan are currently playing in the third and final Test in Sydney. This Test will mark Warner's retirement from the longest version of the game.

The possibilities for Warner's successor are actively discussed, with contenders like openers Matt Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft, and Marcus Harris being considered. Some experts, including Shane Watson, suggest the all-rounder Cameron Green as a potential opener, a sentiment echoed by head coach Andrew McDonald.

Now Smith has thrown his hat in the ring to replace Warner at the top. In an interview with ABC Grandstand after the third day's play in the ongoing Test, Smith expressed his keenness to bat at the top,

"I'm actually happy to go up the top. I'm pretty keen if that's what they want to do. I'm sure the selectors and Ron [Andrew McDonald] and Patty [Cummins] will have a chat after this game but yeah, I'm certainly interested for sure."

Cameron Bancroft, though having a modest average of 26.23 in Tests, has been consistent in domestic first-class cricket, making him a strong contender for the role. Matt Renshaw, with limited Test opportunities, has displayed solidity in Sheffield Shield this season, making a compelling case for consideration.

Marcus Harris, despite past struggles at the Test level, remains in contention, especially given Warner's endorsement.

Considering Smith's impressive batting record at number three, where he averages 67.07 with eight centuries, compared to his average of 61.46 at number four, his willingness to open is a welcome sign. Pairing Usman Khawaja with Smith at the top would provide a balanced right-left combination for Australia. If Smith opens, Green could be accommodated in the middle-order, adding flexibility to the lineup.

With the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies fast approaching, the selectors will have to take a call soon.
