Melbourne Stars' wicket-keeper, Sam Harper, has been hospitalized following a serious blow to the head during a training session at the MCG. The incident occurred as Harper was batting in the nets, attempting a cross-bat shot when the ball struck him on the chin, lodging under the grill of his helmet and causing a severe cut near his throat.

The Stars' medical team promptly attended to Harper to control the bleeding, and although an ambulance was called, he remained conscious, breathing, and stable.

Given Harper's history of concussions, including a significant incident in the BBL in January 2020, caution is being exercised in his treatment. He had collided with Hobart Hurricanes bowler Nathan Ellis, resulting in hospitalization. The training session was immediately halted, and Harper is expected to undergo several scans during his overnight stay in the hospital.

With Harper unable to play in the upcoming clash against Sydney Sixers, the Stars face a dilemma as they lack a backup wicketkeeper.

Former Stars player and Victoria limited-overs captain, Peter Handscomb, is likely to step in, having been named captain of the Cricket Australia XI set to play against West Indies. Handscomb, who has T20 international experience as a wicketkeeper, played for the Stars from 2012 to 2020 and has the potential to provide valuable support in Harper's absence.
