Ashish Nehra defends Shubman Gill [Source: x.com/@sujeetsuman1991]
Shubman Gill’s form in the shortest format, ever since he was named the T20I vice-captain, has seen some major ups and downs. The ongoing series against South Africa has seen him return the figures of four and zero in two innings. He has only played a total of three deliveries so far.
His head coach for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Ashish Nehra, has now dismissed any concerns over his form. He believes it is not ideal to judge a player like Gill so quickly in the T20 format.
“Look, the player you are talking about. If IPL was 3 weeks away, I wouldn’t be worried. Because you are talking about T20 format. And there are only 2 matches played with South Africa. If I am not wrong. And this is our problem. In such a fast-paced format, whether it is international cricket or IPL, if we start evaluating players like Gill after two-three matches, then it will be difficult,” Nehra said during a media interaction.
Nehra believes India’s opening pair should stay intact
Adding to it, he said that if the only motive is to remove someone, then there are many options. However, he believes this is not the option to go ahead with.
“You have many options if you want to see. You can remove Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill. You can open with Sai Sudharsan and Ruturaj Gaikwad. If you want to remove them, you can do it with Washington Sundar and Ishan Kishan. So options are always there if there are talks about changing players after not good stats, but aise karege to bahut mushkil hogi,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gill has not had the greatest run in T20Is throughout the year. In the 12 innings he has played, he has not scored a single fifty, with 47 being his best. He has also gotten out for single-digit scores on five occasions. Whether or not Gill’s spot in the T20I setup will be reconsidered is to be seen.
