Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has heaped praise on India’s newly-appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill for his proactive and courageous leadership during Day 1 of the second Test against England at Lord’s. Gill, captaining India for the first time in a Test match, made a bold decision that reaped immediate rewards, earning admiration from legend.

Sangakkara Hails Shubman Gill's Captaincy

Sangakkara, specifically highlighted Gill’s tactical thinking to bring Nitish Kumar Reddy into the bowling attack in the 14th over, instead of persisting with his more experienced seamers. The move proved to be a masterstroke, as Reddy picked up both England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. This decision showcased Gill's willingness to trust young talent and take calculated risks.

"I thought Gill captained really well, especially with Reddy coming in so early. As a young captain he would be tempted to stay with his main bowlers. But he took a courageous decision. It was a bit of a risk but it rewarded him with two wickets. I like that risk-taking ability of a young captain and Shubman Gill is learning fast," he said on Sky Sports.

Bumrah’s Brilliance Floors Brook

Apart from Gill’s leadership, Sangakkara also lauded Jasprit Bumrah for his exceptional bowling during the final session of the day, particularly his strategic dismissal of the dangerous Harry Brook, who was sent back to the pavilion after scoring just 11 runs.

"What I really loved the whole day was the setup of Brook by Bumrah. I thought that was exceptional bowling. Great control of line and length," said Sangakkara. "He went full, slightly shorter, a bouncer in between, then the control on the seam. Cross seam the ball before he got Brook, and then the perfect seam angling back in to castle him."

Bumrah's ability to vary his lengths and use seam position to perfection once again underlined why he remains one of the most feared fast bowlers in cricket.
