Last night, the cricket fans witnessed a pure thriller. While locking horns with the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans secured a stunning victory in a rain affected game. The GT batters set the stage on fire in the run chase.

Facing a heartbreaking defeat in the crucial fixture, the Hardik Pandya and Co. faced a setback. In the aftermath, Mahela Jayawardene stepped in, dissecting the missteps that cost them the game.

Mid-Innings Meltdown Proves Costly Blow

After facing initial setbacks, Mumbai Indians made an amazing bounceback and put themselves in the playoff race. But the last defeat against the Gujarat Titans made their wait longer to step into the playoff. Standing on 14 points, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans crossed the swords in a rain affected clash.

After two early blows while batting first, MI fought back depending on Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jacks’ 71-run partnership. After SKY walked away scoring 35 runs, Jacks smashed a half-century. But after that, their batting order crumbled. Post-match, Mahela Jayawardene admitted that the team faltered under pressure, saying they failed to bat smartly when it mattered most.

“Both teams made quite a few mistakes all day in the middle and we probably made more than they did. I think that's the difference. I think we didn't play our best, especially with the bat. I thought we were set up nicely initially, and then we just had to bat those last eight overs, which we didn't bat smartly,” he said.

Struggling with a mid-innings slump, Mumbai put on a score score of 155/8 in 20 overs. While reflecting on the match, the MI head coach said that they were short of almost 30 runs which made the job even more tough in the second innings.

“We're probably 30 runs short on that wicket. The guys bowled really well and created a lot of opportunities. So, I think that's a good sign and we treat every game as a playoff game from here on. I'm very proud of the boys today, the way they fought back from that situation,” he added.

GT Claim The Top Spot

In a high-stakes showdown, Gujarat Titans capitalized on every opportunity. After dominating the MI batters, they nailed the game in the rain affected second innings. Despite being 126/6 in the 18th over, Gerald Coetzee and Rahul Tewatia pulled off a thrilling last-over finish, chasing down 15 runs in the last over to take GT to the top of the table.
