Jasprit Bumrah is set to make a comeback to competitive cricket after his year-long absence from the game. The speedster sustained a back injury last October and was subsequently snubbed from India’s 2022 T20 World Cup squad.

Bumrah also missed the entirety of IPL 2023 season for the Mumbai Indians, as he took this time to attain full recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The 29-year-old will now assume leadership role for a young Indian team, currently in Ireland for a three-match T20I series.

The cricketer’s performance will be closely examined by selectors and the Indian team management, as it can also fortify his bid of representing a full-strength Indian team at the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup.

A day ahead of the Ireland T20I series, Bumrah engaged himself at a pre-match press conference, where he chronicled his return to full recovery ahead of the much-awaited ODI events for Team India.

Bumrah narrates his long road to recovery

During the press conference, Jasprit Bumrah was asked to narrate his path towards recovery. The cricketer acknowledged that the journey was not easy, as he had to spend months at the NCA working towards his fitness. The pace veteran said:

“Very happy to be back. Been working very hard at the NCA. It’s been a long road. Everything is good, body feels good and looking forward to playing some cricket.”

“I kept waiting for my return throughout this journey. I met a lot of players at the NCA. Some things in life are just not in our hands. The body will take its time to full recovery. During the phase, I kept waiting for all my physical restrictions to end, so that I can start working on my bowling and fitness. I was also following Indian cricket during my break, and it felt very nice meeting all the players, especially those who just returned from West Indies.”

Bumrah will now be seen in action in the first of the three T20Is against Ireland in Dublin’s Malahide Cricket Club. The match, scheduled to be played on August 18, will feature several young players in India’s playing XI in order to balance work management for the seniors.
