MS Dhoni, the veteran cricketer and one of the most successful captains in IPL history, has decided to relinquish his captaincy role at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of IPL 2024.

At 42, Dhoni deemed it the right moment to pass the baton, paving the way for Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead the team in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Dhoni's decision has stirred varied reactions within the cricketing community. While some praised the move, others expressed skepticism, including IPL and RCB legend AB de Villiers.

De Villiers, speaking on JioCinema, labeled Dhoni's call as untimely and a "huge mistake." He stated, "I feel MS Dhoni stepping down as captain is a huge mistake."

This development marks the end of Dhoni's illustrious tenure as CSK skipper. Since assuming the role in the inaugural IPL edition in 2008, Dhoni led CSK to unprecedented success, securing five IPL titles and overseeing numerous memorable campaigns.

Under his leadership, CSK reached the final a remarkable 10 times, showcasing Dhoni's astute captaincy status.

Despite speculations of retirement, Dhoni, after clinching the fifth IPL title in 2023, vowed to continue playing if his fitness permitted. His decision to step down as captain comes as a significant transition for CSK ahead of the IPL 2024 opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Meanwhile, AB de Villiers, the South African cricketing icon and former RCB player, arrived in India ahead of the IPL season. De Villiers, known for his exceptional talent and fan-favourite status, shared his thoughts on Dhoni's decision, indicating dissatisfaction with the timing.

Dhoni's legacy extends beyond CSK, having also captained Rising Pune Supergiant during CSK's suspension from the league. His influence on Indian cricket and the IPL remains unparalleled, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
