'I Will Still Back Suryakumar Yadav...,' Ex-Indian Selector Shares Insights On India's Combination For World Cup

Former wicketkeeper Saba Karim is of the opinion that Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav are the best option for India's middle-order if the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer do not recover on time for the Asia Cup, which gets under later this month. Both Rahul and Iyer have resumed batting in the nets but are yet to be declared fit. Reportedly, the BCCI has delayed the announcement of the squad for the Asia Cup as it is still giving time to the injured duo to see if they are totally fit for the tournament.

But in case they do not make the cut, Karim feels Kishan and Yadav would be good replacements. Kishan had a good run in the recently concluded ODI series against West Indies where he scored fifties in all three matches while opening the batting for India. In 17 ODIs so far, Kishan has scored 694 runs.

Karim believes that Kishan's flexibility to both open the innings as well as bat in the middle order makes him a good choice in the squad. While Yadav is yet to impress in the ODI format, Karim feels his experience will matter.

“The selectors should take KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer into consideration. They can be included in the team if they are fit. But the wait has not ended, the team will be announced on the 20th from what I know, they have the time until then."

“But if they are not fit, Ishan Kishan is a good option against Rahul since he can bat as an opener and in the middle-order. If Shreyas Iyer is not fit, you have 2-3 options to pick from, in Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav. But for me, Suryakumar has gained experience of playing one-day cricket both domestically and internationally. I will still back Suryakumar Yadav."

India will next play ODIs in Asia Cup that is set to start on 30th August and it would be interesting to see what combination they go with in the all-important continental cup.
