Starc confident about Cummins return to Ashes - (Source : AFP)
Mitchell Starc thinks that Pat Cummins does not need much preparation to play in the first Ashes Test in Perth. While Cummins’ availability is still dubious, Starc believes that Cummins just knows when to switch on.
Starc confident about Cummins despite the potential absence
Pat Cummins continues to rehab for his lower back injury and there is no confirmation from Cricket Australia regarding his participation in the first Ashes Test and beyond. However, with the Ashes scheduled in less than two months’ time, the availability of Pat Cummins the bowler has become a major talking point. Mitchell Starc believes that the experienced Cummins would not need much time to prepare for the Ashes.
“Playing with Pat and being close with Pat, he doesn't need much. Whether he bowls three warm-up balls and the first over the game, he's on the money, he just knows when to switch on or how to switch on really quickly. So what it looks like for him in his prep, it's going to be certainly different to what mine feels and looks like, and that comes with experience and age,” starc remarked.
The Australia speedster returned to bowling ahead of the ODI series against India after a break since the Caribbean Test tour. On the other hand, Cummins has not bowled a single ball since Australia’s last Test against West Indies in July following his back injury. Starc opined about Cummins as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
"He's ultra-positive as always, and there's still some weeks to go before we get to Perth for the Test prep. So we'll see where that lands. Hopefully we see a lot of him through the summer, and we'll see where we get to in Perth," he added.
Starc on the depth Australian bowling full of promising youngsters
Meanwhile, both Starc and Hazlewood are set to play for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground from November 10-13. After this they will move on to the first Ashes Test starting from November 21 in Perth. Speaking of the preparations, Starc remarked about the big four of Australia’s fast-bowling attach comprising Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, and Boland.
"Having spent so much time with Josh [Hazlewood] and Pat and myself and Scotty [Boland], we all prepare slightly differently. We all feel like we need different things. I feel like at times I need to bowl more around preparation stuff, whether it be training or after layoffs."
As Cummins’ potential absence has raised questions about the depth of Australia’s fast bowling, Starc mentioned about Australia’s domestic cricket and their strong reserve. The “fairly talented group of 19-20-year-old bowlers” clearly speak of the depth according to Starc.
