'He's Also Probably Learning...': Rahul Dravid On Suryakumar Yadav's Persistent Struggles In ODIs

Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has said that the team-management will continue to give opportunities to Suryakumar Yadav in the ODI format and its up to him to make the most of the chances.

One of the best T20 batsmen of the current era, Surya has failed to transition into the 50-over format despite a multitude of opportunities.

Having made his ODI debut in July 2021, Surya has managed just 476 runs in 25 games at an average of 23.8 with just a couple of 50+ scores.

Surya has struggled in the ongoing series in the Caribbean as well, raising persistent questions over his place in the starting XI.

Speaking to the media following India's 6-wicket defeat in the 2nd ODI in Barbados, Dravid came to the defence of the 32-year-old, stating that SKY is learning how to play in this particular format while being on the job.

He also added that there is no IPL-style ODI tournament for domestic players like Surya to hone their skills.

"Surya is a really good player, there is no doubt about that. He has shown that. Especially in T20 cricket, in domestic cricket, in white-ball cricket. He has some very good performances. He would be the first one to admit that his ODI numbers haven't been up to the standards or the standards that he has set in T20," Dravid said in the post-match conference.

"He's also probably learning ODIs. He has played a lot of competitive T20 cricket through the IPL before he made his debut for India. In One-dayers he hasn't played as much competitive cricket, because there is no IPL for one-dayers," he added.

''He's also learning about his game, and learning to bat in the middle overs. He is a talent and we want to give him as many opportunities as we can. It is really up to him now to take those opportunities and use those opportunities. In the kind of setup we are, we give people as many chances as we possibly can," Dravid said.

Surya managed just 24 runs in the 2nd ODI, which India went on to lose. The final game in Port of Spain could well be his last chance to salvage his place ahead of the World Cup.
