Team India is set to face New Zealand in the final match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday, March 9. In the lead-up to the final, several reports and speculations from fans and cricket experts have claimed that the impending match might well coincide with the ODI retirement of national captain and senior member Rohit Sharma.
A day prior to the final, Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill cleared the air surrounding Sharma’s retirement rumors while speaking with the reporters.
Shubman Gill says team unaware of Rohit Sharma’s plans
Indian vice-captain and opening batter Shubman Gill confirmed that all the recent team discussions behind the dressing room have been affiliated to winning the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy title against New Zealand. Gill added that he along with the rest of his teammates are all unaware about Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement plans and rumors.
While speaking with the reporters, he said:
“All our discussions have been about winning the final and the title. The team and I have not been told anything about this decision.”
Shubman Gill also believes that even Rohit Sharma will not be thinking about his ODI retirement at the moment, and claimed that the legendary Indian opener will be making his own decision after the final, regardless of the result. He added:
“Rohit Bhai would not be thinking about it at the moment. I think once the match ends tomorrow, he will make a decision. There is no talk about it within the setup.”
Rohit Sharma's Performance In Champions Trophy 2025
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India topped the Group A points table with easy wins over Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand before consigning Australia to a defeat in the semifinals. Rohit Sharma’s form as a player, however, has been an area of concern for the Indian team this tournament.
The legendary Indian opener has managed to tally just 104 runs in four innings of the competition at a below par average of 26. The 272-ODI veteran also soared past the 11,000-run mark in the ongoing tournament.
Unbeaten so far in the ongoing 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the ‘Men in Blue’ will face New Zealand in the final in Dubai on Sunday, March 9.
