'He Plays Golf Right-Handed…': Abbott On Warner's Stance Against Ashwin

Australian opener David Warner surprised one-and-all by batting right-handed during his side’s monumental run-chase quest against India in Indore. The cricketer listed a rebellious 53 at the top, until he failed to read Ravichandran Ashwin’s straight one against the run-of-play.

After Australia were reduced to 9-2 within the second over of the innings, Warner decided to counter Ashwin by batting right-handed for a while. The move seemingly worked wonders in the initial stage as he even whacked a boundary against the veteran Indian spinner.

Following Warner’s eventual dismissal at the hands of Ashwin while batting right-handed, his teammate Sean Abbott claimed that the opener usually practices in the nets with his non-standard batting stance.

Abbott defends David Warner’s right-hand play

Australian speedster Sean Abbott claimed that David Warner batted right-handed in the match in a bid to break Ravichandran Ashwin’s rhythm. Abbott also added that the dynamic opening batsman plays golf right-handed as well, and regularly practices his batting in the nets with his wrong hand.

While speaking at the post-match press conference, the Australian speed gun said:

“I think if David Warner is just going to sit there and bat left-handed, Ashwin is not going to miss his length too often. With the ball spinning so much, he’s got the one that goes the other way, the straighter one, and all the variations along with that. Davey just thought he had to change it up.”

“He plays golf right-handed, we see how dynamic he is with his switch-hitting and stuff, so he weighed up those options. He’s done it before, he practices batting in the nets.”

David Warner also charted up a near run-a-ball 52 in the first match of their series in Mohali. By notching up his second successive fifty-plus score against India, the Australian batting veteran continues to fine-tune himself ahead of next month’s 2023 World Cup.
