Team India beat Australia by a whopping 99 runs in the second ODI at Indore on Sunday, September 24th, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill delivered a batting masterclass, each notching up sensational centuries.

Their performance helped India amass a big total of 399 runs in the allotted 50 overs.

The Mumbai batter notched up his third ODI century in a mere 86 balls, displaying an aggressive approach that kept the Australian bowlers on their toes. He was eventually dismissed for 105 runs and his knock was embedded with 11 boundaries and 3 sixes.

Iyer returned to international cricket in Asia Cup 2023 after a long lay-off due to a back injury. After the group matches, Iyer sustained a back spasm and missed the Super 4 stage and final.

However, with Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya sidelined, Iyer was reinstated in the playing XI for the first ODI against Australia. His Mohali appearance, however, was one to forget, as he was dismissed for a mere 3 runs on a lifeless wicket.

However, he bounced back in Indore, seizing the opportunity with both hands and taking the Australian bowlers to the cleaners from the word go. Iyer’s century came as a significant relief for the Indian management, who were looking for solutions for the number 4 position.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, fresh from his century, took to Twitter to extend heartfelt thanks to his fans and everyone who stood by him.

With Shreyas Iyer back in top form, Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul consistently scoring runs, and Suryakumar Yadav displaying excellent form, India now faces a delightful selection dilemma for the middle order in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023.
