'He Has Been In Conversation'- AUS Head Coach On Green Replacing Warner As Test Opener

Australian head coach Andrew McDonald insisted all options are on the table for the team management and selectors to consider before replacing veteran opener David Warner, who bids farewell to Test cricket following the New Year's Test at the SCG against Pakistan

As the selection for the following two-match series versus the West Indies and a same-sized trip to New Zealand looms large, McDonald said the decision-makers consider various options, including promoting young Western Australian cricketer Cameron Green.

Dropped from the team since the final Ashes 2023 fixture at The Oval, the 24-year-old prodigy is averaging 33.59 with the bat and 36.03 as a medium fast-bowler after 24 Tests for Australia.

However, as a means to keep him involved and fasten his growth, the selectors could invest time in Green as a stand-in opener.

McDonald Says Green Among Options To Open In Tests

"Cameron Green, as a discussion around who are the best six batters, has definitely been in the conversation," McDonald was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo, even as Warner himself voted for a return of Victorian opener Marcus Harris to take his post in the first Test against the West Indies.

Among other possibilities, Australia could be going back to tried and tested Cameron Bancroft, who is the top scorer of the ongoing Sheffield Shield season at this stage.

Or, in a like-for-like replacement, left-hander Matt Renshaw, who, like Harris and Bancroft, has been an experienced first-class and Test cricketer for Australia.

"All options will be considered. And I said we're not going to make the decision until the deadline which will be the West Indies game," he added.

Australia host West Indies in a two-Test series, starting January 17, before travelling across to New Zealand for another set of two World Test Championship (WTC) fixtures in February.
