'He Did The Wrong Thing': Former Ashes Winners Give Views On Jonny Bairstow's Stumping

England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow's dismissal sparked emotional, ugly scenes at the Lord's Cricket Stadium on Sunday's fifth and final day of the 2nd Ashes Test.

It all happened during the 52nd over of England's 2nd innings when Bairstow, after having ducked under a harmless short delivery from Cameron Green, decided to leave his crease without grounding his bat.

Bairstow, as it later turned out, had been doing it regularly. Sensing an opportunity, Alex Carey decided to throw the ball at the stumps, immediately after the English cricketer left the crease.

According to the MCC law book, Carey's actions were completely legit, and Bairstow was eventually adjudged 'stumped', much to the home crowd's disappointment.

As per the law, "the ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play."

The incident was described as a "doozy bit of cricket from Bairstow" by Mike Atherton, while World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan echoed the same, lauding Carey for his 'smart work"

"Bairstow ducks, the ball is still active. He goes walking down the wicket and is out. It's smart work by Carey," Morgan told Sky Sports.

Meanwhile, former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting added his perspective by stating:

"Jonny did the wrong thing and he's paid with losing his wicket in an Ashes Test match."

Bairstow's dismissal led to some ugly scenes in the Lord's long room, with a section of MCC members heckling the Australian players.

Following the ugly scenes, the MCC released a statement to unconditionally apologize to the Australian players, while also revealing that it has suspended three of its members.

Meanwhile, Australia went on to win the Lord's Test by 43 runs despite a magical knock from England skipper Ben Stokes to take a 2-0 lead in the 5-match series.
