Sourav Ganguly has expressed his desire to see Virat Kohli opening the innings for Team India alongside regular opener Rohit Sharma at the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies. The former Indian captain even claimed that Kohli can score a 40-ball century while opening the innings, even though the latter has drawn much flak from fans and experts over his IPL 2024 strike-rate for the RCB franchise.

During India’s previous T20I assignment against Afghanistan at home earlier this year, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal shared the opener’s role alongside Sharma in their three-match series.

Moreover, Gill and Sharma also opened the Indian innings throughout last year’s 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

Ganguly makes big claim over Kohli’s opening prospects

Sourav Ganguly believes Virat Kohli can tonk a 40-ball century for Team India if the latter was given an opportunity to open the innings.

The former cricketer also advocated the idea of having Kohli opening the innings alongside regular opener and current team captain Rohit Sharma at the T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and the United States in June this year.

As quoted by the PTI, Sourav Ganguly said:

“Kohli & Rohit should open for India in the T20 World Cup - Virat can score 40 ball Hundred.”

Virat Kohli is currently leading the run-scoring race this IPL 2024 season, having tallied 379 of them from eight innings to hold the coveted ‘Orange Army’. While the dashing RCB opener has maintained a staggering strike-rate of over 150, the cricketer also recorded the slowest century of IPL history, when he took 72 balls to list 113* against Rajasthan Royals earlier this month.

Kohli, however, continues to remain India’s forceful vigor at T20 World Cups, considering he is the leading run-getter in tournament’s history and he also scripted a win for the ages against Pakistan back during the 2022 edition in Australia.
