Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has hinted at Karun Nair’s selection in the playing XI for the forthcoming Test series against hosts England. Upon landing in England and roughly a couple of weeks prior to the series opener in Leeds, Gambhir praised Karun for his experience in County cricket and for his recent touch with the bat.

The former Indian cricketer even hinted about giving a lengthy run to Karun Nair in the national team for India’s upcoming endeavors.

While speaking with the reporters alongside captain Shubman Gill in England, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Karun Nair for prioritising domestic cricket during his exile from the national team. Gambhir claimed Karun’s experience of playing County Cricket will come in handy for India in English conditions, adding that the team management might give the 33-year-old a “decent run” in the playing XI.

He said - 

“It's just great for domestic cricket. All the youngsters will know its importance. If you keep doing well there, doors are never shut for you. Always good to have the experience of Karun, he played County cricket there and he is in really good form. His experience will come in handy. More importantly, we won't judge someone by one or two Test matches. If someone has scored heaps of runs, he will be given a decent run.”

Karun Nair's Form Ahead Of England Tour

Karun Nair recently represented Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, where he aggregated 198 runs from eight innings at a staggering strike rate of 172.17.

Shortly after the season, Nair started off his England tour with a splendid 204 from 281 balls for India A in Canterbury against England Lions bowlers. The cricketer punched out 26 fours and a six as India A mounted 557.

If selected, the series will mark Karun Nair’s return to the Indian Test team for the first time since March 2017. He has played just six Tests so far for India despite making his debut back in 2016.
