In a major development, MS Dhoni was reinstated as CSK captain for the remainder of IPL 2025 season after Ruturaj Gaikwad got ruled out due to elbow injury. Naturally, experts shared their reaction to the change and explained how it will affect CSK’s campaign. 

CSK, five-time IPL champions, are in a limbo this year, losing the last 4 consecutive games while chasing. With just 1 win in 5 games, they slipped to 9th spot on points table.

Meanwhile, for the rest of the season, CSK lost their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to elbow injury. Subsequently, MS Dhoni, who led the franchise to five titles previously, took over as stand-in captain.

Here’s what cricket experts think of the new change and how it will affect CSK’s season.

1. Ambati Rayudu

Ambati Rayudu said it’s sad to see Ruturaj injured, but fans will be thrilled to see Dhoni leading CSK again. He believes Dhoni can still work his magic and help CSK qualify for the playoffs.

“First of all, it's very sad that Ruturaj, the captain of CSK has been ruled out of the IPL. But all the fans will definitely be extremely excited to see MS Dhoni lead CSK again. He can always pull out his magic and make CSK qualify from here. It will be one great story. So, I am very, very excited and I just hope that he weaves his magic all over the CSK team," he said on ESPNCricinfo.

2. Manjoj Tiwary 

Tiwary called it great news for CSK and Dhoni fans. He felt Dhoni was always quietly leading from behind, and now that he's officially captain again, it could bring good luck to the team.

"It is a good news for CSK and all MS Dhoni fans. He was not the captain officially from last two years but he was only leading the side somewhere helping Ruturaj. I always felt that till Dhoni is playing for Chennai he should only captain them. Maybe there will be a turnaround now as he can prove to be a lucky charm," he said while talking on Cricbuzz.

3. Murali Karthik

Karthik said CSK tried to groom Ravindra Jadeja as captain before, but it didn’t work. “The script came back to MS Dhoni,” he said, adding that Dhoni is still the biggest name in the team.

"They (CSK) tried to nourish Ravindra Jadeja for a year but that didn't work. The script came back to MS Dhoni. God writes different script for him. This time as well, CSK have to go back to Dhoni because he is a big name. CSK have lost their main batter, leave captaincy aside," he said on Cricbuzz.

4. Robin Uthappa

Uthappa was more cautious. He said Dhoni returning as captain won’t fix all of CSK’s problems. “There are gaps in the team,” he pointed out, especially with Ruturaj missing as a solid batter.

"I don’t think him being captain is going to automatically turn the tide for CSK. There are a lot of gaps in that side, right? Well, how do you fix that? How do you cover for a solid batter like Rutu, who seems like the only one finding some form?” he said on JioHotstar.

5. Aakash Chopra

Chopra said Dhoni’s 11return means smarter use of bowlers. He believes Dhoni will make sure spinners like Ashwin, Jadeja, and Noor Ahmad get to bowl their full quota. “12 overs of quality spin will happen,” he said confidently.

"There will be a better use of bowlers with MSD coming in as captain. Not that Ruturaj does not do it but in so many matches 12 overs of spin is not happening despite having Noor, Ashwin, Jaddu. When Dhoni is captain this thing will happen. 12 overs of quality spin. There will be better use of Jadeja," he said in a video posted on his X.
