MS Dhoni came into IPL 2025 as an uncapped player, fitting into the new BCCI rule of a player being categorised as uncapped cricketer if he has not played international cricket since five years. He left CSK captaincy after the triumph of the 2023 season, but with Ruturaj Gaikwad out due to elbow injury now, MS Dhoni is all set to take over the leadership reigns of the Yellove Army again.

MS Dhoni Replaces Ruturaj Gaikwad As CSK Captain

Mostly, uncapped players are young and have minimal experience of captaincy and only few past international players like Sandeep Sharma benefitted in IPL 2025 because of the rule. However, no uncapped player has captained the franchise before and with appointment of MS Dhoni, he is now the first uncapped player to lead an IPL team.

Under MS Dhoni, CSK have already won five IPL titles, and they would hope that their charismatic leader bring back their struggling campaign back on track this season. So far, CSK have won only one out of their five matches, and have been struggling with their tempo with the bat.

The loss of Ruturaj Gaikwad as a batter is a huge loss, and it would be interesting to see who fits in his place. Previously, in the 2022 season too, MS Dhoni took over the leadership reigns midway during the season in place of Ravindra Jadeja, and with age and form not on his side this time around, it would be interesting to see how he goes about his business.
