Former Indian Head Coach Ravi Shastri has given his opinion on Jasprit Bumrah's fitness for the England Tests. The current commentator believes that Bumrah should be carefully managed for the five-match Test series in the UK.
Ravi Shastri Wants Indian Management To Take Care Of Bumrah
India's spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, broke down after bowling a lethal spell in five consecutive Test matches in Australia during December-January. The right-arm pacer couldn't bear the burden of the Indian side alone and broke down on the final day of the Sydney Test.
He then had to miss out on the crucial Champions Trophy 2025, which India apparantly won and then, made his comeback in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after missing out on a few matches for his side, Mumbai Indians (MI).
However, former head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Bumrah's workload should be carefully managed. Ideally, they would want him to play all five Tests, but considering his fitness, they must be cautious.
Shastri has warned that he would be very aware of the pacer, considering he has already injured his back. Going forward, the management would have to ensure that they do not make him play more than two matches at a time. Hence, they would have to rest him for the third Test and make sure that he stays fit until the end of the series and so, thereafter.
“I would be very, very careful with Bumrah. I would give him two Test matches at a time and then wait for the break. Ideally, make him play four. You'll be tempted to make him play five if he starts off in a great manner, but it's how his body pulls up,"
In fact, Shastri further went on to say that Bumrah should himself ask for rest during the series if he feels something is building up inside his body that could later cause him any kind of trouble.
“He should be given the first opportunity to say, ‘Yes, a little, I am feeling the niggle. A break would help.’ Give him that break,"
Furthermore, Shastri was affirmative about India's chances in England if all three of the pace trio, including Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Mohammed Shami, are available for the high-profile series in England.
"I think with Siraj, Jasprit and Mohammed Shami, these three, if they are fully fit, they will give England heaps of problems."
Bumrah's High-Voltage Series Down Under
Jasprit Bumrah was India's star man during the Border-Gavaskar trophy in December-January, where he bagged 32 wickets in five games and was a one-man show in Australia. He helped India to a greater extent but couldn't save the nation from the embarrassment of losing the five-match Test series 3-1.
Currently, this season in the IPL, he has featured in five matches so far for MI, where he has managed to pick five wickets at an economy of 7.90.
