South Africa was defeated by New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final despite a century from David Miller. Herschelle Gibbs, a former Proteas batter, made a controversial statement after the loss that Miller's late charge was meaningless.
The second semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025 season saw New Zealand face off with South Africa. The Proteas fell short in a gigantic 362-run chase leading to a 50-run defeat.
However, the only positive for South Africa was David Miller. He scored a century off just 67 balls, though, his knock wasn’t enough to guide his team home.
Herschelle Gibbs passes controversial remark on David Miller
New Zealand, powered by centuries from Rachin Ravindra (108) and Kane Williamson (102), posted the highest-ever total (362) in Champions Trophy history.
In response, South Africa stumbled early, with Temba Bavuma’s slow start (56 off 64) raising questions about the approach. Before Miller could reach the crease, South Africa was already in a deep hole and needed over 200 runs off 23 overs.
In spite of losing partners at frequent intervals, Miller battled right until the last ball, getting his century in style. However, Herschelle Gibbs wasn’t impressed.
His comment implied that Miller’s late fireworks were inconsequential, as South Africa never really looked like winning once the required run rate spiralled out of reach.
Frustrated David Miller Slams ICC Over Scheduling
South African cricket star David Miller played a stunning knock in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final, scoring an unbeaten 100 off 79 balls, but it wasn’t enough as New Zealand emerged victorious by 50 runs.
Following the heartbreaking loss, Miller didn’t hold back his frustration, criticising the ICC for the hectic travel schedule that hampered South Africa’s preparation.
There was a brief turnaround between the matches for South Africa, and they had flown from Karachi to Dubai on Sunday to play their semi-final. However, at the last minute, they were shipped back to Lahore within 12 hours, which resulted in fatigue and little time to recover.
