Pakistan's former captain, Rashid Latif decided to 'clear the air' surrounding the recent remarks of Jason Gillespie, ex-coach of the national team by stating that his comments were not targeted towards Aaqib Javed but on the entire system. He stated that his inappropriate words were against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and not just on the current coach of the Men in Green.
Latif Talks About Gillespie's recent remark
Gillespie, resigned in December 2024, two months after Gary Kirsten stepped down from his role as the head coach of the white-ball team. Ever since, then it is Aaqib Javed, who is in-charge of the Pakistan cricket team. While speaking officially, Latif said:
"Jason Gillespie was referring to our system as a joke. I had a feeling that he would do this once he went back. The same power that caused the departure of Gary Kirsten and Gillespie has now been given to Aaqib Javed. We have made Aaqib Javed both the selector and the head coach. Foreign coaches do not compromise on principles."
Latif Gives Mickey Arthur's Example
He pointed to the example of Mickey Arthur, who was strict with players, and as a result, the Pakistan team became number one in T20Is.
"When I was the head coach of Afghanistan, the players respected the head coach like a father and tried to learn from him. Today, the results speak for themselves. In our system, players have become bigger than the game," Latif explained.
What Did Jason Gillespie Say?
Former Pakistan coach Jason Gillespie slammed his successor Aaqib Javed after the Men in Green failed to go past the group stage of the Champions Trophy and said:
"This is hilarious. Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes, campaigning to be coach in all formats. He is a clown," Gillespie wrote on Threads.
Pakistan, was the first team to exit from the Champions Trophy 2025 following two crushing defeats. They first lost against New Zealand and then lost to their arch-rivals Men In Blue. Ever since, then some bold moves have been taken by them with star players like Shaheen Afridi and Babar Azam missing from the ODI and T20I squad for New Zealand Tour respectively.
